The A K Khan Healthcare Trust also took the initiative to launch HPV vaccination program in Bangladesh. In June 2007 Dr. Bimalangshu Dey and Dr. James Cussack of Massachusetts General Hospital requested Tanvir Raquib, the International Coordinator of the International Socio-Scientific Conference on Cancer 2008, to try to start a HPV vaccination program in Bangladesh. Grameenphone came forward with the necessary funds to give HPV vaccine to 50 young girls (between the ages of 9 and 12) from poor families. Prof ABMF Karim, Chairman of the Oncology Club, assembled a core team comprising the OBS/Gynae specialists of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to execute the HPV vaccination program.

In 2008 this team played pivotal role in launching the International Socio-Scientific Conference on cancer which was followed by the first HPV vaccination program in Bangladesh which is also another first for the developing world. The cost of the vaccine was paid for by Grameen Phone, an affiliate of Telenor. This conference paved the way for the Bangladeshi oncologists to get advanced training in the institutions such as the Massachusetts General Hospital and Tata Memorial Hospital.

On 28th December 2008, fifty young girls received the vaccine (GlaxoSmithKline; Cervarix). This pilot vaccination program has paved the way to make this vaccine available in Bangladesh. A K Khan Healthcare Trust has been monitoring these girls in order to measure the long term success of this initiative.
